Roadway in the Wilderness

Isaiah 43:18-19 NASB “Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”

Here we are. Some may not consider Colorado a wilderness, but it is considered high desert becuase of the amount of precipitation it receives. At any rate, it has been our wilderness and desert, but that is far from a bad thing! Especially when the above verse is considered. Let me explain…

Talan and I had lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for many years. We met there and married in 2007. Each of our 4 children were born there. We rejoiced in friendships there, and suffered through tragedies there. Our marriage struggled through a 3 month separation at the beginning of 2015, but the Lord was victorious! During that time, we also sold our house and Talan dissolved his construction business so that we could venture out to new places physically and spiritually. In September 2015, we moved to Arvada, Colorado. I’m not even sure how much of the details to share with you all…there are so many things! Well, I guess I’ll be summarizing a bit of this so as to expound more on the recent happenings. We moved to CO wth business plans, community plans, a church fellowship and housing in mind. None of those things came about in the area or way we thought. We were hosted by some friends in Arvada for 6 weeks as Talan searched for work and a place to live. It became apparent that the Denver area was not where God intended to plant us. We prayed, not having any money, and heard about a large family up in Fort Collins who would be willing to have us stay in their unused basement while we got established. We went up, met the family, and moved in the following week. We had a cozy little walk out basement with a great view. And by cozy, you must know I mean pretty small. Upstairs our host family lived with their 6 children, and her parents lived in an adjoining house. We had quite the community forming. Our faith journey had truly begun.

We stayed through the winter, which in true winter fashion, was dark and trying. Bur in the loneliness, lack of work, and trials, God was working into us a weight of glory and faith that we had not yet known. He is faithful.

January brought a renewing of our hearts and minds as we sought the Lord for direction. We joined a church fellowship that God led us to called Resurrection Fellowship (REZ) and joined a small group. Then at the beginning of February, my back went out. BAD. We believe it was a bulged disc that was pinching my sciatica. I was in a lot of pain and unable to move much. This trial turned out to be one of those most defining times for us. Talan was unable to work and we were running out of money fast. The members of our small group all stepped in and helped. Some brought meals, others helped with the kids and cleaned our bathroom and did our dishes. We had to see the Lord DAILY for wisdom, strength, guidance, provision and healing. God did a healing work in my back when we attended a service in faith!! I came out of the building an inch taller then before! The recovery was slow, but sure. Friends gave us money to pay our bills just in time. God truly used His people to bless us and provide. They were His hands and feet to our very real needs! He is faithful!

As my back mended, we got our tax return money and began planning our move from our stay on the lake in our basement home. Our hosts had accepted us not their very large family gatherings and treated us as one of their own with so much kindness and love. But it was time to move on. So we began house hunting. We put an ad on the bulletin board at REZ and looked on all the websites. We received a few leads and followed them, thinking, this must be what God has provided for us! But each time the door would shut. Like in our faces, through crazy circumstances. One seemed like a sure thing, and then it was not in our time frame and was impossible. So we began to cry out to God, “Lord, what would You have us do? We want to be in Your will!”

At this time we heard that our dear friends from Coeur d’Alene were going to be getting a travel trailer and traveling around proclaiming restoration and filming a documentary. We thought, well lets join them! We felt God give us a go ahead word, and we began to pursue that. One thing we have learned through all this is that God is not linear; meaning He does not work on a timeline like we do. Everything in is view is connected, as he sees the whole picture. So we began to pray and pray.

In the meantime, back in January, God had begun to stir in us a vision for a retreat center, a healing center, focusing on restoration in lives and families of believers. We prayed about it every day, thinking that maybe our next move would be there. In March, 2016, God gave Talan a vision of an elderly gentleman who had property and needed help fixing it up. He showed us that we were to be an answer to prayer and that God would lead us to this man and his property. So we let the vision rest as we waited for God to show us. As we’re waiting, we thought we’d travel with our friends and share God’s goodness.

So it came time to move. May 15 was the day we were going to move. We had boxes packed, and a crew to help, but no place to move to. God had not shown us a house, or a trailer yet. On Friday, May 13th, we received a call from a friend at REZ who knew our situation. He asked Talan to come meet him at 9 o’clock at night. He took Talan to a house up the road from his place and said, “Here’s our rental. It’s empty and God told us to rent it to you on a month to month basis, discount it and not charge a deposit. You can move in on Sunday.” God is faithful.
