Summer days can seem so fleeting. The time floats by and escapes, like dandelion seeds flying on the breeze. With four children running about, it’s difficult to carve out a few minutes to update everyone. But here goes!
I wanted to start by recapping a little of what we are doing. Talan and I just had our 10 year anniversary. In September 2007 we were married in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and spent the following 8 years there. 4 kids were born to us during that time, and when our youngest was just 4 months old we moved to northern Colorado. Looking back on the last almost 2 years, we believe our time in CO was a desert season for us. We thought we’d be settling there, but God had other plans for us. (When I say desert season it just means a time of isolation that God used to teach us lessons and help us grow closer to Him.) After our time there was done, God has led us to Oregon. The story of that is in previous blog posts, so go and read up if you want the full story! It’s a good one, I promise. So God brought us to Oregon. He provided the funds we needed to move out here and get established in a rental house in the town of McMinnville. The property where the retreat center will be is 35 miles from town up in the coastal range by the Nestucca River. Dave Mickey purchased the property 20 years ago and has been preparing the land. Now that we are here, we have joined Dave and have begun building on the property. The first project has been to make an addition onto the little cabin so that it can be a fully functional living structure. As it is near the garden area, it will eventually be living quarters for the gardener and family.
Things are moving along well. We had extra work to do in town to help Dave with over the past few weeks. One of his rental properties was in need of repairs. We were still able to spend some time up at Nenamusa a bit in between or for long weekend stays. Talan, Nate and Dave have been building onto the cabin whenever they had a chance and from here on out it’s a race against the rains to get it finished. Or at least get a roof on it. So this week is full of long days of building for the men.
As for the kids and I, we’ve been trying to enjoy the sunny days in our amazing back yard, on bikes, at parks, at the pool, and building relationships with new friends. Ezekiel turned 4 last week and we were grateful for a friends’ backyard pool to play in & keep cool. The kids are learning responsibility in the form of a chore list they work on every day. With school starting this week, we will have a prayer time together every morning to hear from the Lord, asking for guidance, protection and provision.
We have visited 3 local church communities over the past 2 months (we’ve already been here for 2 months!!!!), and have made amazing connections with loving Jesus people at every one. We are still praying about where God wants us to fellowship and connect more permanently. But we love experiencing the Church in so many forms!
And can I just say, we LOVE Oregon. We feel as though we’re constantly saying, “Where have you been all my life?!” about our life here. The people we’ve met are amazing. The land is gorgeous and overflowing with produce, vegetation and flowers. There are so many local farms and homesteads. We’ve even found an amazing source for raw goats milk and farm eggs that we get on a barter for EO’s! (I sell/use doTERRA essential oils.)
God has been so faithful to supply our needs every time right when we have a need. But this life we have chosen is not all roses. How else does the Lord refine His followers but with trials and sorrows and pain? Talan and I are constantly battling to fight together against the enemy of our souls instead of alone against each other. We are made very aware that the enemy’s tactics are to divide and distract. And so, with every battle that we overcome, our faith grows stronger. And for the times we fall into division and distraction, we repent, get back up, and try again. And our faith and dependence on the Lord grows stronger. We strive each day to get time alone with God and to hear His voice leading us. Then we have a choice to respond, to answer His call, and walk in His way instead of our own. Every. Day. “But Lord, be merciful to us, for we have waited for you. Be our strong arm each day and our salvation in times of trouble.” Isaiah 33:2 NLT. “And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23 NASB (emphasis added)
If you are reading this, we would ask for a prayer for us to continue God’s work, stay in unity with each other and the strength and discipline to keep a repentant heart as we follow God’s leading. We also love to pray for you, and we do every day! But if there is a specific need, please let us know how we can pray for you! firstname.lastname@example.org
As for our needs, if the Lord has impressed on your heart to give, these are our needs:
Monthly bills/living expenses $3200/mo. We have $2050 pledged monthly so far. We are still in need of an additional $1150/month to cover these bare minimum needs. As of now, the Lord is leading us to serve full time in the building and developing of Nenamusa Sanctuary which means we are living in faith that God will provide our monthly expenses through donations.
Monthly health supplements $50/mo. (We are fortunate to have state health insurance that covers the costs of a naturopathic doctor)
On a side note, I have decided not to homeschool Zion (4th grade) and Eden (1st grade). We have prayed and feel led to put them in public school to start the year. Our desire is to homeschool, but the lord has not given us the green light for that yet.
